Do you know what or who a Young Carer is? Being as young as 5 and up to the age of 25, a young carer is someone who takes on a significant caregiving role for a family member who has a chronic illness, sufferers with substance misuse, has a disability, mental health concern, or is aging.
We recently had the opportunity to work with Helen and her incredible team at Young Carers SA, capturing a multitude of events across the inaugural Young Carers Week. Upon receiving the initial email enquiry from one of Helen’s team I had quite a few questions. It’s as important for me to understand the purpose and desired outcome of the photography, as it is to understand the event itself.
I caught up over the phone with Helen and made some suggestions around what I felt would garner the most mileage and exposure for the incredible work Young Carers SA was doing, and how we could best increase exposure and awareness to young carers. It was decided that along with photographing the various events, we would create a short film about Young Carers Week – something that highlighted the incredible kids and showcase the events they were able to be a part of as a result of the efforts of Helen and her team. To follow are some images we captured, and the short film we created, with thanks to Mark Dohring for capturing and editing this film for us.
All going to plan this content will assist Helen and her team to get ahold of more government funding (nudge nudge Nat Cook MP) for their organisation and the ensure the Young Carers Week can continue into the future, bigger and better than ever!
